things to know before your visit Georgia

In this blog, I will share my personal experience and provide some valuable insights into things you need to know before you travel to Georgia in 2024.

Georgia is located between Europe and Asia in the South Caucasus. Lately, it has increasingly become a popular tourist destination due to its diverse culture, affordable destination, stunning landscape, and hospitable people.

As a first-time visitor to Georgia, I was filled with excitement and nervousness about exploring the Caucasus region. As soon as I landed in the country, my mind was a whirlwind of questions – will I be safe as a solo traveler? Can I easily navigate around? There were so many unknowns, but I was excited, nonetheless.

In the end, my Georgia trip was an incredible experience, but I wished I had known a few useful tips before I visited the country. Here are the things you need to know before you visit Georgia.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Check Visa Requirements

Before traveling to Tbilisi, Georgia, you must have a valid visa. Currently, passport holders from 98 countries can stay up to one year without a visa inside the country. Passport holders from 65+ countries are eligible for a 30 or 90-day tourist e-visa. Click here to know if you need a visa to enter Georgia.

If you travel to Georgia from the UAE and hold a valid UAE residence, you can enter Georgia without a visa. However, it is important to note that you must meet certain requirements, including having at least six months of valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. You must also provide proof of booked accommodation if the immigration officer requests it during random checks.

It’s a budget-friendly destination

Georgia is a great place to visit, whether you are a budget traveler or have some extra money to spend. Accommodation, food, and transportation are all reasonably priced compared to western standards. You can enjoy multi-course meals, a top-rated hostel, and a bottle of excellent wines for less than $10.

During my 2 weeks trip, I spend an average of $30 per day without compromising on quality and comfort. I also was able to do plenty of free and affordable activities without breaking the bank.

It’s affordable and easy to reach from UAE

Georgia has become an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years, especially in the Middle East. Thanks to the free-visa regime, UAE residents can easily travel to Georgia without the need for a visa. Also, with the introduction of direct flights to Tbilisi or Kutaisi Airport, it has become more accessible.

If you are looking for budget-friendly flight options to Georgia, I recommend checking Wizz Air flights or you can browse through Skyscanner to find a great deal.

Do not exchange Lari at the airport

georgian currency

Before I traveled to Georgia, I exchanged my UAE dirhams for GEL at the UAE airport; it was a costly mistake. I received less than expected, and the commission fees were too high. To avoid the same mistake I made, I recommend bringing USD and exchanging your money at a reputable exchange in Georgia.

If you need cash in the airport, you can withdraw money from ATMs inside the airport using your debit card for a small fee.

English Is Not Widely Spoken

In most major cities, many locals speak good English, especially the younger generations. But once you visit the rural areas and the mountain region, you might find yourself lost in translation and expect to make a lot of charades.

Before you travel, download a translation app to help you communicate with the locals. I used Google Translation – it’s been a lifesaver for me on my travels.

Spring and Autumn is the best time to visit

Georgia has a varied climate, and every season offers something different depending on where you visit and your interests.

Generally, the best time to visit Georgia is during the spring and autumn months. During this time, the weather is mild, and the landscapes are stunning. It is ideal for hiking and exploring mountain regions. But if you like winter sports, February and March are the best time to visit.

Public Transportation is well-organized

The bus stations in Georgia can be hectic and confusing, especially in Tbilisi. But once you figure out how it works, their transportation system is actually well-organized.

If you are planning to travel outside the city in Georgia, marshrutka is very common transportation. For popular routes, there’s usually a set schedule for departures, while others leave when it’s full. Also, there is an international train available to travel between Trans-Caucasus countries (Armenia and Azerbaijan).

Local driver is not for the weak

things to know before you visit Georgia

When it comes to crazy bus rides, I thought I had seen it all in my home country. But let me tell you, the drivers in Georgia take it to a whole new level! The drivers can be pretty mad, overtaking on blind corners and zooming through winding mountain roads even in heavy rain. So be prepared for a wild adventure! For safety, wear your seatbelt and avoid traveling by road at night.

Local People are friendly and welcoming

Georgian people are one of the friendliest and warm people I ever encountered. They always go out of their way to make you feel welcome and I have so many stories to share about their kindness.

For example, one time I did not have a small bill to pay for a taxi, but the driver just let me ride for free. When I told my host about it, she said that it’s quite common for locals to treat foreign visitors with such generosity.

I can’t even count how many times locals helped me with directions or even walked with me until I reached my destination. When I take a minibus outside the city, they always make sure I’m comfortable and offer me the best seat. The list goes on and on. Their kindness made my trip more memorable.

It is a safe country to visit

As a solo female traveler, safety is always my top priority. In Georgia, I felt completely safe moving around, even when using public transportation. The locals are incredibly welcoming and friendly, which made me feel at ease. I never encountered any harassment or unwanted attention. If there are certain things that you should be aware of, probably taxi driver scams and road safety.

Overall, Georgia is generally safe. But like anywhere else, it is important to exercise caution and stay aware of your surroundings.

There is food beyond kachapuri and khinkali

things to know before you visit Georgia

When you tell someone you’re visiting Georgia, they will most likely recommend trying khinkali or khachapuri. And while I do agree that these dishes are a must-try for first-time visitors, I also recommend exploring Georgian cuisine beyond these famous dishes.

Georgian cuisine is all about using fresh and local ingredients to make your taste buds sing. Before my trip, I had assumed I would be eating bread and fast food in Georgia. But I was surprised by the flavorful dishes and never had fast food the entire trip.

Also, Georgian cuisine is complemented by its rich wine culture. So be sure to indulge in some of its delicious wines to experience the local flavors fully.

… Speaking of Wine

Things to do in Tbilisi

Georgia has a rich history of winemaking, dating back over 8000 years. They hold the distinction of being one of the oldest wine regions in the world, with a history that predates even the Romans’ winemaking

Georgian take their wine culture seriously and consider it an integral part of their heritage. One best representation of this is the monument of “Mother of Georgia” in Tbilisi. It depicts a woman holding a bowl of wine in her left hand to welcome guests and a sword in her right hand to defend against enemies.

Saperavi

If you are new to wine, Georgia is a perfect place to learn. I was surprised to find out that they have so many different types of wine. I recommend trying Saperavi and Kinzmarauli if you are a wine novice; it is a great introduction to Georgian wine.

Do Not Skip the Caucasus Mountains
