things to do in Baku

Need help figuring out where to start your Baku trip? In this blog, I will share my personal experience and guide on things to do in Baku in 3 days. Follow this route to make the most out of your trip to the Azeri Capital.

Baku is a vibrant city located on the shores of the Caspian Sea. It has an incredible history stretching back to ancient times. Since then, Baku has been shaped by its waves of immigrants, forming a unique and diverse character evident in its architecture, cuisine, and culture.

In recent years, Baku has increased in popularity, and it’s easy to see why. Its fascinating history, scenic streetscape, vibrant art, and culture make it a great tourist destination.

When planning my trip to Azerbaijan, I didn’t have high expectations for Baku. It would just be a quick stopover for one night before I explore mountain regions. But as I started digging deeper into the city, I realized there was more to see and things to do than I initially thought. So I couldn’t pass through without giving Baku the attention it deserved!

Why should you visit Baku

As someone who thought that there was not much to see in Baku, let me be the one to tell you this. Baku is a breathtaking place that should be on everyone’s travel list.

The city’s got it all – modern infrastructure, well-organized transportation, and a bustling center with a mesmerizing skyline. But what sets Baku apart is its culture. It’s so rich and captivating that you’ll get lost before you know it.

It’s a surprisingly affordable destination too. So whether you are on a budget or not, Baku is worth adding to your bucket list.

Things to prepare before your visit

  • The first thing you need to do before you travel to Baku is to make sure you have a valid visa. You can apply for a visa online through the Azerbaijan e-Visa portal. The e-Visa is valid for 90 days and allows you to stay in Azerbaijan for up to 30 days. UAE residents can get a visa upon arrival for 25 USD, provided they have a valid visa for at least six months. Ensure you carry your Emirates ID, so there are no problems during transactions with officials.
  • If you are staying for more than 15 days, you need to get registered at the place where you are staying with the State Migration Service. It is usually done by the hotel (or any other accommodation provider). But you should ask in advance.
  • There are several direct flights to Baku Airport. I recommend you browse through Skyscanner for budget-friendly flight options to Azerbaijan. You’re sure to find a great deal that perfectly fits your itinerary.
  • When you are traveling, things could go wrong. That is why it is essential to buy travel insurance! Allianz Travel offers competitive rates and different levels of protection to match your travel needs.
  • Azerbaijan uses the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN), and 1 UAE dirham is equivalent to 2 UAE dirhams. Do not buy Manat at the airport or in your country of origin.

How to get from and to the Airport:

things to do in Baku

By Bus: Airport buses run from Terminal 1 & 2 to the Central Railway Station (28th May Station). A single trip costs 1.50 AZN, but you must purchase the BakiKart from the machine kiosks just outside the airport.

Tip: If some random taxi driver tells you the bus is unavailable, ignore it and wait at the bus stop. They tried convincing me to get into their taxi for 50 AZN.

By Taxi: With the Bolt app, the ride will cost you approximately 10 AZN, depending on your hotel location. Take a taxi from the airport to save time and energy on your first day.

How to Get Around Baku:

By Taxi: I recommend using the Bolt App to avoid bargaining with random taxi drivers when moving around Baku. The cost will be about 2-3 AZN depending on where you’re going.

By Metro and Bus: Buy a BakuCard when arriving in Baku. It will allow you to travel free on any public transportation. The card has three different types to choose from 24hrs (24 AZN), 72hrs (45 AZN), and one week (70 AZN). BakuCard also offers special discounts on major tourist attractions and cafes & restaurants in Baku.

Where to Stay in Baku

There are excellent budget and mid-range accommodation options available in Baku that will set your wallet back nothing! Here are my suggestions:

New Baku Hotel (8.9/10)I stayed here while visiting Baku. I found the hotel to be nice and clean. Located in a quiet neighborhood and conveniently located near supermarkets and restaurants. However, it’s worth noting that this hotel is a bit far from the city’s main attractions. So, this might not be the best choice if you are looking for a central location. But if you prefer a peaceful atmosphere, I recommend this hotel.

How Safe to Visit Baku

Visiting Baku as a female solo traveler has been a safe experience. I felt secure being out late at night. Despite the language barrier, locals are accommodating and kind. The streets of Baku feel safe, with plenty of police presence in the major tourist areas.

Petty crimes, pickpocketing, and scamming tourists are rare in Azerbaijan. But, of course, it is important to exercise common sense.

 Best Time to Visit

Baku experiences a semi-arid climate, with hot summers and cool winters. Generally, the best time to visit is Spring (April-May) and Autumn (October-November)as the weather is mild and comfortable.

Avoid visiting the city during the peak of summer (July-August) unless you don’t mind the heat and humidity. Many locals move to the mountains to escape the heat during summer. The winter months (December-March) can be cold and rainy.

Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors in Baku:

  • Buy a BakuCard when you first arrive in Baku. It will allow you to travel free on any public transportation (except by taxi) and special discounts on major tourist attractions.
  • Do not take a taxi at the airport, as it’ll give you an unfavorable first impression of the country. Instead, take a bus or arrange a private transfer from your accommodation.
  • Always use an app for taxis when moving around the city. I recommend using Bolt, the most reliable local app in all major cities in Azerbaijan.
  • Buy a local SIM but not from the airport. I used Bakcell during my stay in Azerbaijan, and it has good network coverage.
  • Do not exchange currency from your country of origin or at the airport. Instead, bring US dollars (I got UAE Dirhams) and exchange them from outside the airport.
  • You can easily withdraw cash from a bank in the city using an international debit or credit card at an ATM. I have no problem withdrawing money from ATMs at the airport or anywhere in the city.
  • Everywhere in the city does not open until 10 am. So if you are an early riser, take breakfast at your accommodation.
