Flame Tower

If you are still contemplating visiting Azerbaijan, this is your sign! This post will give you seven reasons to add this country to your travel list in 2023.

Azerbaijan is a country that is only on a few people’s lists of places to visit. I hadn’t originally planned on traveling to Azerbaijan. But as someone constantly searching for a cheap destination to explore, I was hunting for affordable flights from the UAE.

As I browsed through options on Google Flights, a suggestion popped up on my screen: Baku, Azerbaijan. Curiosity got the better of me, and I started researching the country. The more I read, the more intrigued I became, and before I knew it, I clicked the “book flight” button.

Visiting Azerbaijan was an incredible experience for me. However, you should also see the country before it becomes a popular destination. From stunning landscapes, diverse cultures, and a rich history all to explore, Azerbaijan should be on your travel list.

Where exactly is Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan is located in Southwestern Asia and the Great Caucasus Mountains to the north. The country’s land is distinctly characterized by its diverse topography, including vast lowlands, highlands, and semi-arid regions.

Bordered by Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, and Turkey, the country enjoys a strategic position, enabling it to maintain good relations with these neighboring countries (well, except Armenia). It also has a beautiful coastline along the Caspian Sea to the east, which adds to its charm.

Things to prepare before your visit

  • The first thing you need to do before you travel to Baku is to make sure you have a valid visa. You can apply for a visa online through the Azerbaijan e-Visa portal. The e-Visa is valid for 90 days and allows you to stay in Azerbaijan for up to 30 days. UAE residents can enjoy a visa on arrival for $25 (valid visa for at least six months). If you are staying for more than 15 days, you need to get registered at the place where you are staying with the State Migration Service. It is usually done by the hotel (or any other accommodation provider). But you should ask in advance.
  • For UAE residents, there are several direct flights to Baku Airport. I recommend you browse through Skyscanner for budget-friendly flight options to Azerbaijan. You’re sure to find a great deal that perfectly fits your itinerary.
  • When you are traveling, things could go wrong. That is why it is essential to buy travel insurance! Allianz Travel offers competitive rates and different levels of protection to match your travel needs.
  • Azerbaijan uses the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN), and 1 UAE dirham is equivalent to 0.46 AZN as of the time of writing. Do not buy Manat at the airport or in your country of origin.

7 Reasons Why You Need to Visit Azerbaijan in 2024

1. It has a rich culture and history

Reasons why you need to visit Azerbaijan
Old City of Baku

Azerbaijan’s culture is like a beautiful tapestry, woven from threads of its past. This country has been touched by the ancient Silk Road, the grand Ottoman Empire, and the influential Soviet Union, making its culture uniquely rich and diverse.

In the heart of Azerbaijan’s capital, the Old City of Baku, you’ll find a stunning mix of old and new. Here, the Shirvanshah’s Palace stands as a testament to medieval architecture, yet it sits comfortably alongside modern buildings. It’s so special that UNESCO has marked it as a World Heritage Site.

Then there’s Sheki, a city that feels like stepping back in time. It’s famous for its traditional buildings and a history that’s closely linked with the Silk Road.

Over in Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-biggest city, the vibe is vibrant with colorful markets. It’s a place that’s contributed tons to Azerbaijan’s culture and literature.

But Azerbaijan’s charm doesn’t just come from its cities. Across the country, you’ll meet various ethnic groups, each proud of their unique customs and traditions. It’s this mix of people and places that makes Azerbaijan’s culture so fascinating.

Azerbaijan is a hidden treasure for those eager to discover new places. It’s not as crowded as other well-known spots, making it perfect for truly experiencing its real culture.

The country is full of ancient cities surrounded by walls, beautiful untouched landscapes, and friendly people. It’s an ideal getaway for anyone wanting to take a break from the busy life of large cities.

3. There are so many things to see & do

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, a foodie, or just seeking adventure, Azerbaijan has something for everyone.

In Baku, the main attractions are the Old City of Baku and Shirvanshah’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other must-see sites include the Maiden Tower, Gobustan and Absheron Peninsula region, Flame Tower, and Heydar Aliyev Center.

And that’s just scratching the surface. With so much to see and do, you could easily spend weeks exploring Azerbaijan without ever getting bored.

4. Experience the Warm and Friendliness of the Azeri People

Locals I met during my travel in Azaerbaijan

Azerbaijan people are known for their warm and welcoming nature. They are friendly and ready to help tourists all the time.

When I first arrived in Azerbaijan, I was nervous about how the locals would treat me as a female solo traveler. But my worries were all gone the moment I arrived in the country.

One of my favorite experiences was staying with locals in rural villages. When I arrived at their houses, they made me feel at home and treated me like a family who came to visit. Every night, we chatted about Azerbaijan’s culture and history, giving me a deeper understanding and appreciation for the country over a cup of traditional tea and sweets. Despite the language barrier, they went out of their way to communicate with me.

 5. The food is AMAZING!

If you love good food, you’ll want to add Azerbaijan to your travel list. Azeri cuisine is a blend of Turkish, Persian, and Russian flavors. You can indulge in traditional dishes like plov (rice with meat), dolma (stuffed vegetables), and kebab (grilled meat). You will also find plenty of snacks like baklava and shekerbura washed down with some black tea. Your taste buds will thank you!

If you visit Sheki, try the famous Piti (a mix of lamb meat cooked with chickpeas, chestnuts, and fat in a ceramic pot) and halvasi sweets.

6. It’s Easy on the Budget

Azerbaijan is a very affordable destination for budget-minded travelers compared to western standards. Therefore, you can enjoy activities and experiences without breaking the bank. It also has free activities to enjoy a full itinerary without spending much money.

Accommodation options range from hostels at around $10 per night to 4-star hotels at about $40 per night. And you can get a good meal for under $10 at most restaurants. Transportation is also very affordable, with taxis starting at around $1-$2 per ride and bus fares rarely exceeding a couple of manats.

7. Breathtaking Mountains

The Greater Caucasus

If you love nature, the mountains of Azerbaijan are a sight to behold. The country is home to three mountain ranges: Greater CaucasusLesser Caucasus, and the Talysh Mountains

The most famous mountains to visit among locals and tourists are Tufandag, Shahdag, Beshbarmak, and Guba region, including the famous Khinaliq Village.

No matter which ranges you choose to explore, you’re sure to be amazed by breathtaking views  of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and rolling hillsides. It is to see why it is a paradise for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers alike.

How safe is it to visit Azerbaijan?

Taxi Stand in Sheki

Yes, it is a safe country to visit, even for solo female travelers. The country has low crime rates, and petty crimes are rare, which will make you feel a sense of security.

As aforementioned, the locals were both respectful and helpful, making my experience safe and enjoyable. However, if there is something I want you to watch out for, it is taxi driver scams and road safety; the traffic in Baku is wild.

So if you’re considering a trip to Azerbaijan, don’t let safety concerns hold you back. Instead, be thoughtful and cautious. You’ll likely have an amazing and memorable experience.

Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors in Azerbaijan:

  • In Baku, buy a BakuCard when you first arrive. It will allow you to travel free on any public transportation (except by taxi) and special discounts on major tourist attractions.
  • Do not take a taxi at the airport, as it’ll give you an unfavorable first impression of the country. Instead, take a bus or arrange a private transfer from your accommodation.
  • Always use an app for taxis when moving around the city. I recommend using Bolt, the most reliable local app in all major cities in Azerbaijan.
  • Buy a local SIM but not from the airport. I used Bakcell during my stay in Azerbaijan, and it has good network coverage even in mountain villages.
  • Do not exchange currency from your country of origin or at the airport. Instead, bring US dollars (I got UAE Dirhams) and exchange them from outside the airport.
  • You can easily withdraw cash from a bank in the city using an international debit or credit card at an ATM. I am fine withdrawing money from ATMs at the airport or anywhere in the city. But you should bring cash when you visit the mountain region.
  • Dress modestly. Azerbaijan is a predominantly Muslim country which means they are conservative.
  • Download translation apps. English is not widely spoken, especially in rural areas.
  • Tipping is optional across Azerbaijan. But it is certainly welcomed as a symbol of gratitude, especially in major cities like Baku.

Final Thought

As someone who has visited and learned much about Azerbaijan, I recommend it to everyone before it gets popular. The country is still an affordable destination to travel with delicious food, hospitable people, and authentic touch. It is sure to be a trip you’ll never forget.

And who knows? You might fall in love with this little-known country as much as I did.
